American Bittern

Botaurus lentiginosus

Notes:

Most American Bitterns migrate south for the winter, but a few like this one hang around coastal locations. This one has been seen feeding on meadow voles out in the field.

Karen, this one never came out of the tall grasses and was hunkered down out of the wind behind a clump of grass most of the time.

Good eye! I've heard these are hard to spot as they blend in with the grasses so well!
