Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

Description:

I'm not sure whether this is a downy or hairy woodpecker. The beak looks to long to be a downy.

Habitat:

At the Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary

Thank you Bob. I figured it was but just wanted some additional input to be certain! I've never spotted one before without knowing it was one.

Bill on Downy is about 1.5 times the size of the eye. The bill on the Hairy is about 3 times the size of the eye. (My estimates.) The Hairy is also larger than the Downy but, without some reference point in the photo, the bill is a better identifier.
