Red-masked Parakeet

Psittacara erythrogenys

Description:

Also known as cherry-headed conure or the red-headed conure. These are a couple of the feral ones of San Francisco. Red mask ove the face and part of the head. Pale ring of flesh around the eye and red shoulders and under the wing. Most of the rest of the bird's body is green. Noisy birds. When one squawks they all follow simultaneously.Tolerate of bay area cold weather and found usually high up to watch for predators.

Habitat:

This group move around to different areas of San Francisco. Usually found in Palms and Eucualyptus trees.

Notes:

These two and a few others were spotted most of the time within the Fort Mason area

Yes there was a report of a Macaw. I am not sure if it is still out there. I believe there may be at least 3 species of parrot/parakeets in the bay area.

I've lived in California my entire life and have only seen one Parrot type bird before. It was a large scarlet macaw up in a tree near my home. I later found out that it had escaped from his owner and refused to go back. Not sure how it ended up but it was strange to see a large macaw in N. California.
