Small tan snake with irregular brown splotches found in middle of sidewalk at night...no bigger round than my pinkie finger...about same size as a worm snake, maybe a bit longer. Have encountered on previously living under trash cart. Feisty attitude, tried to strike.

It is a northern water snake
Yes, I was thinking water snake but unsure. Other possibilities were rat snake or brown snake, but most likely water snake.
