Greater Roadrunner

Geococcyx californianus

Description:

Bushy crest and long, thick, dark bill. It has a long, dark tail, a dark head and back, and is blue on the front of the neck and on the belly. Black, brown, white stripes/splotches with blue, black, brown, white crown of feathers on top of head. This bird was about 12 inches long.

Habitat:

At the top of the hill on the southside near the water treatment facility at Belton Lake. I snapped this picture right after the road runner ate a lizard. I was too slow to capture the action.
