Common Split Gill Fungi

Schizophyllum commune

Description:

Numerous, variously-sized white, hairy, multi-lobed, fan-shaped fungi with scalloped margins attached to a fallen log. The width of each fungus is greater than the distance from its attachment to the log to its leading edge. The largest individuals were ~ 2 inches wide and 1½ inches from attachment to leading edge. The gills were not observed but are well described in easily-accessed sources.

Habitat:

Lowland insular tropical mesic mixed forest and shrubland.

Notes:

Spotted alongside the Ehukai Pillbox Trail ascending the bluff behind the coastal strand on the North Shore of Oahu.
