A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
This hopper nymph was about 8 to 10 mm long. With a blotchy brown body, it had a broad flat head but with a low profile ridge in the midline of the rostrum. Laterally placed eyes were pale. Wing buds were visible. The last pair of legs had spikes all through the length of it.
Spotted in a suburban garden with native and non-native plants and trees.
I am a little confused with this leafhopper nymph. To me it appears to have similarities to the Flat-headed Leafhopper (Subfamily: Ledrinae) and the Spiny-legged Leafhopper (Subfamily: Tartessinae). I am not able to find a match for this nymph with the knobbly head. Any assistance with identification will be greatly appreciated. thanks. Family: Cicadellidae

This one is Leuba's but some experts are wrestling with it.

...btw if you want ID's on hard stuff bowerbird has some experts but is a very poor discussion machine.

Thanks for web link Stephen. I have this somewhere but I can't find it ! I will go through it - found it very useful for adult hoppers. Thanks again.
My point about the keys. I have looked at the ones from NSW. If you wanted to go through them you probably only need to look at Victorian ones that are not also in NSW. I might have a look later http://www1.dpi.nsw.gov.au/keys/auch/
Great find. I have one or two that I cannot find proper identities for. I cannot remember seeing it in the keys
