Mediterranean Mussel

Mytilus galloprovincialis

Description:

Between 5 and 10 cm in length, grows in clusters, often very large ones. The shell is symmetric, dark brown to black (here covered by other organisms) with very sharp edges.

Habitat:

Native to Mediterranean, this is a common shellfish in Adriatic and Mediterranean sea; observed on all beaches in Dubrovnik riviera, on rocks and rocky bottoms in shallow waters close to shores.

Notes:

This is an edible shellfish, and cultivated in many regions; where it was introduced it is also considered as invasive species.
