Great Horned Owl

Bubo virginianus

Description:

They are a heavily built owl that are very common in the Americas.

Habitat:

I never understood how people could find owls during the middle of the day, then we drive around a corner and this guy was just sitting on a dead tree staring at us at about 3 pm. They are found throughout the Americas in wooded areas.

Notes:

At Chapparal WMA

Thanks Christy! We just rounded the corner and he was kind of far away, so I pointed him out and we stopped to all look with our binoculars, and we just started laughing because no one was expecting an owl haha

You should try playing their call on your phone just after daylight, see if you can get them to come a bit closer. I know where a mating pair is near me that I'm almost guaranteed to see when I go look for them, but this guy was in a whole different part of the state! Thanks :)

Nice shot, Ashley! I have not ever been able to find one by myself...only with others!
