Finches using salt block

Carduelis mexicanus

Description:

House finches will use salt blocks on occasion as a dietary supplement. At first, I thought this was abnormal or unusual but a specialist with the Audubon Society/NC wildlife department told me that they and a couple other species will regularly do this.

Habitat:

My yard

Notes:

Photos taken between 12-26 August; one of the males had conjunctivitis

Thanks, Joshua, for pointing out that I had the correct link but had forgotten to change the name when I posted this.

Thanks, Sachindra! I don't have the salt block out specifically for the finches but learned a few years ago that they also appreciate it, as do various mammals.
