Red shouldered hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

Medium sized hawk of 15 to 18 inches in height from tail to head. Generally brown and white in bands with concentration of brown on shoulders. Bright yellow beak. THis individual exhibited what appeared to be an injured or malformed right wing. It was able to fly easily and capture prey while observed.

Habitat:

Found in a manmade bald cypress stand in a retention area behind a shopping center.
