(Eastern) Black Swallowtail

Description:

Family: Papilionidae. Female. Black with white orange, white and blue spots. Wingspan: 3.1 - 4.3 inches (8-11 cm) Two orange spots with black dot inside in center of back wings. Mostly lays eggs on plants within the carrot family such as Queen Anne's Lace or dill. Adults prefer nectar from Milkweed, Purple/red clover and Thistle.

Habitat:

Meadow with abundant weeds and flowers. On purple clover.

Notes:

Also known as American Swallowtail or Parsnip Swallowtail
