Pharaoh's Chicken

Neophron percnopterus

Description:

Large white bird with black flight feathers and bright yellow skin around the eyes. Yellow bill. Looks scrawny.

Habitat:

We were admiring the Kaṇḍāriyā Mahādeva Temple at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India built during 1017-1029 when this bird came soaring in and flew about above us for a while. Then it deliberately flew to the very top of the temple where it stopped for a while...the sun was in the wrong place for a good photo but it was too good an opportunity to miss. I wondered if it nested there but closer look shows me a hornet's nest...does it feed on these insects?

Notes:

Also called Egyptian Vulture. I saw one many years ago on a dry river bed in Haridwar, India.
