Striped Tiger

Danaus genutia

Description:

To me it appears to be a Strped Tiger, but it is exceptionally large.

Notes:

I saw these tigers and some other species flying around while having our lunch at Phi Phi Island. Quickly finishing the lunch I dashed for a few shots, mostly getting on all fours! Sun was hot, the butterflies were overly active and shy. Few that ultimately settled on these tiny flowers on thin stems for a moment, dangled and fell to the ground and flew away! My knees are bleeding! (We're on half pants as tourists!) Still I managed a few shots and am sharing.

Yes Pam. This one has the 'pouch'! This tiger is quite large as compared with the the other one, so much so that every time it sits on a flower it cannot support and comes to the ground!

Male: The male has a pouch on the hindwing. This spot is white with a thick black border and bulges slightly. It is a cluster of specialised scent scales used to attract females.
