Fun fact! The horned lizard has a unique way of defending itself - it targets would be predators with a stream of its own blood! When attacked, it pressures its sinus cavities until the blood vessels in its eyes rupture, and it sprays its attacker with blood from its eyes and mouth. This not only confuses would-be predators, but also the blood is mixed with a foul-tasting chemical as a secondary defense. It also puffs up its body to cause its spiny scales to protrude, making it difficult to swallow.
