Double-banded Scoliid

Scolia bicincta

Description:

The Double-banded Scoliid is a member of the Family Scoliidae (Scoliid Wasps). Dark and hairy, medium-sized wasp. Two creamy white bands on abdomen. Perhaps this is mimicry of the Mason Wasp, Mondobia quadridens. Size is 21-25 mm.

Habitat:

Range is Eastern and central North America. Habitat is fields with flowers. Season is Late Summer: July-September, sometimes October (North Carolina). This one was photographed in an open area at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park near Augusta (Richmond County), GA.

Notes:

Per BugGuide.net, it is no doubt a parasitoid of beetle larvae, as are other members of this genus.
