Wood Nymph Moth

Eudryas sp.

Description:

An extraordinarily beautiful moth, which then surprised me even more by flashing bright yellow underwings. It also had a bright yellow abdomen. Family Erebidae (Noctuidae).

Habitat:

Came to the lights of a store, Axtla de Terrazas near Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Notes:

There seems to be 3 accepted species of Eudryas (E. grata, E. brevipennis and E. unio). As far as I can tell, all three of these have a dark border to the bottom of the underwings, something which this one clearly does not. I don't think it belongs to any of the above mentioned species. Several references are cited below, including some very old ones in which the generic name was Euthisanotia. http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2005/07/14/w... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Victori... https://www.flickr.com/photos/29847562@N... http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.ed... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eudryas_gr... http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/speci... http://nearctica.com/moths/noctuid/agari... https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eudryas_br...

Thank you so much Irina for finding what you did about this moth. It has turned out to be quite confusing systematically, but you found the base of the pyramid!!
