In a large mass of sticky spittle was a last instar nymph and nearby, an adult. The spittle ball of a large last instar nymph can be quite large and is also more viscous and sticky than it looks. In the first picture there is an ant trapped in the spittle, unable to move or escape. These adults are ideally colored for camouflage, useful since they do not produce spittle.
