Texas Leaf Cutting Ant

Atta texana

Description:

Incredible little farmers who harvest leaves not to eat, but to culture a fungus they eat. Colonies can be over 2 million strong and have homes 15 to 20 feet deep. These ones had long trails to shrubs they were destroying. Non-aggressive and not shy, I was able to watch them for a while. Ants varied in size greatly.

Habitat:

Restored pine forrest which had recently been burned.

Notes:

Found on my 2015 spring break trip
