Mechanitis polymnia is safe! I doublechecked the subspecies and asked Kim garwood as well. we come both to the same conclusion, Mechanitis polymnia, possibly Lycidice or Isthmia. The problem is your location. Nicaragua is inbetween the biogeographic areas of Mexico and Costa Rica/Panama. Both we are not really sure about the subspecies. I would leave it as Mechanitis polymnia in the meanwhile.

wow, thanks bayucca. Lot of work gone into that ID. I checked out all the 3 ID's, and am inclined to go with Mechanitis polymnia.
Hypothyris lycaste seems to only have 2 lines of white bars on the upper wing.
And Heliconius hecale seems to have too many white marks (spots).
I'll go with Mechanitis polymnia and see if I get any comments.

Sorry, but I have to add a 3rd ID. For me it is Mechanitis polymnia, but I am still checking the subspecies. I tend to Mechanitis polymnia isthmia, but Mechanitis polymnia lycidice looks almost identical. But I did not have find out where the differences are, besides the location, which is not always very reliable, beside the location of Pam's picture, which is very reliable ;-)

thanks Miguel, but I'm not sure this is a tiger longwing. The white markings are different, and there are so many butterflies with similar colours and markings. Think I'll wait for confirmation.
