Australian Brush Turkey

Alectura lathami

Description:

The unmistakable featherless red head and yellow waddle of the Australian brush turkey make it easy to spot. It has an all black body and the adult birds weigh about five pounds. Australian brush turkeys are the largest of Australia's three species of megapodes, or mound builders; they build mounds to incubate their eggs.

Habitat:

The Australian brush turkey is found in eastern Australia. It is common in rain forests, but also inhabits drier areas. It eats seeds, insects, and fruit. Although it primarily feeds on the ground, it can be seen on branches eating fruit.
