Red-eared Slider

Trachemys scripta elegans

Description:

They have a dark shell and dark skin that has yellow streaking all over. The young one in the first two pictures has a large red ear patch, and the older one in the last two pictures is melanistic and doesn't have color on his skin. Melanism is quite common in older sliders.

Habitat:

I was just canoeing down some creeks off a lake and there were dozens of turtles out basking.
