Zebra Longwing Butterfly ( Pupa )

Description:

I was riding around, looking for butterflies and flowers, to photograph. I came upon a field of wildflowers, which had a lot of host plants, in this field. I came upon a pupa, of the Zebra Longwing Butterfly, on one of its host plants - passionflower. The color of this pupa, was different shades of brown. This pupa, had two, long flanges, on the head end of this pupa. This pupa, was one and three sixteenth of an inch long, and seven sixteenth of an inch wide. This pupa, had spines on the wing area, of this pupa. I also saw some silver areas, on this pupa. Common host plants: purple passionflower, corky stem passionflower, yellow passionflower, and several other passionflowers. Order: Lepidoptera Family: Heliconiidae Genus: Heliconius Species: charitonia Adults: Black wings with narrow yellow stripes. Zebra Longwing Butterfles, are medium-sized butterflies, with elongated wings. The yellow eggs, are laid singly, or in small clusters, on new growth of the host plant.

Habitat:

Tropical hammocks and edges of river forests. The Zebra Longwing Butterfly, lives in warm, damp, tropical areas. It is often found, in hammocks and thickets. A denizen of more forested settings, it frequents subtropical hammocks, forest margins, shrubby thickets, and adjacent open areas. It is a regular sight, in many butterfly gardens, and suburban yards and parks.
