Dusky-legged Guan

penelope obscura

Description:

These big birds - which get to be around 68 cm tall, similar to crows - can be seen on trees around Treinta y Tres' countryside. They are mainly black with a distinct red throat, dark legs and a quite long tail. Both female and male are alike. They have a loud call and according to guides it is easier to hear tham than to see them as they live on trees in woods; I saw these two while walking along the countryside very early in a beginning of automn morning. It plays a vital role in the environment as it is considered a seed dispersor.

Habitat:

Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia.
