It is an eastern mud turtle! We used the herpsofnc.org website to match the plastron.

This looks more like a baby mud turtle to me. Baby box turtles are also more the size of a fifty-cent piece and usually have knobby projections on the back of the shell.

Great capture! It's unusual to find them when they are this tiny as they usually remain hidden in the leaf litter.

What a great learning opportunity for the children!

Yes, it was found by kinder student where I teach. We talked about how a turtle has a small home range and if removed will try to walk back, often getting hit by cars. We then put it back where it was found (a little farther away from the playground)!

Cute little baby. Did this turtle come from the wild? I would love to know more about this little guy (or gal). Do you know what species of Box Turtle it is?

I hope it was returned to its natural environment when the photo op was done!
