Hi Lipase, I did look at King Alfred's cakes but they just didn't seem the same as other spottings I have of them plus as you say they were growing on an Oak tree, I'm going to try and get another opinion from one of Mum's friends that is a fungi obsessive! I will remember for next time which fungi can go in yor mission, I didn't realise it was you that had started it but great idea! I have submitted only the others you mentioned though I think :-)

hi Debbie, nice find! My guess is King Alfreds Cakes; I just read in The Collins Guide by Paul Sterry that they can grow to 10cm across. A few things in this guide seem a bit off but the wikipedia article says they grow up to 7cm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daldinia_co... Interesting that it was growing on oak. Btw, obviously I'm glad you're adding to 'have you seen this fungus!?' but I'm only going to send off to the BMS spottings of Calocera viscosa, Lycoperdon pyriforme, Daedaliopsis confragosa, Amanita muscaria, Auricularia auricula-judae, and Piptoporus betulinus so this mission is just for those fungi. Thanks for your contributions, much appreciated
