Argemone albiflora
About 3 ft tall. Leaves tough, thistle- looking. Base of leaves clasp the stem. Stem has numerous fine hairs - may be prickers- but I couldn't reach it to find out. The flower is what caught my attention- looked a bit like a poppy from a distance. About 2 1/2" across, 5 (?) delicate petals, center with yellow stamens. Lovely! UPDATE: Hah! I knew it looked like a poppy with prickles!! Hence the common name "Prickly Poppy!" Love when that happens. :)
Cleared area around the base of a cell phone tower- on the wrong side of the chain link fence, just out of arms reach....at my daughter's elementary school property.
First thought it was a thistle , but that flower is not very thistle- like! More like a poppy. Authorities do not agree as to whether it is native to Florida or has just been naturalized for so long. So I'm erring on the side of caution and saying it's not a native.
