Dolichoderinae

Anonychomyrma biconvexa

Description:

A small (10mm) black and grey ant with a banded abdomen and white tip on the tail.

Habitat:

Exploring a wet eucalyptus log in tall rain forest.

Notes:

This is a common local ant known to be strong smelling and to form relationships with Lycaenidae (hairstreak butterflies). They defend the larvae, pupae and adults from all sorts of attack. I believe even the european wasp is repelled by these little heroes.
subfamily: Dolichoderinae
genus: Anonychomyrma
