Atractosteus spatula
I was surprised to see a pair of alligator gar in the canal behind my backyard. The position of their anal and dorsal fins far back on their bodies almost opposite each other, and their rounded tail fin are distinguishing characteristics, as is their long snout.
In an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton, FL.
The pair floated near the surface in about 4 feet of water and swam slowly. They were about 2 feet long.
