Trailing Arbutus

Epigaea repens

Description:

Native species. Low growing plant with oval, thick, leathery leaves. Sweet smelling flowers that can be pink or white. Trumpet shaped bloom with five petals. Evergreen.

Habitat:

Sunken Meadow State Park, NY. Found growing next to the trail in wooded areas.

Notes:

Considered "Exploitably Vulnerable" in New York State (meaning that they are likely to become threatened in the near future due to various conditions). It is difficult to propagate and seems to be sensitive sudden environmental changes. My favorite find of the hiking trip!
