Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Nyctanassa violacea

Description:

I spotted this lovely bird at the same pond where I have been watching geese and ducks. I assume it's a female, because there was another bird in the same tree with her that was putting on a cool display with his feathers (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/243...). I hope I see more of them this season!

Habitat:

Summer residents in this part of GA for breeding only. Their breeding habitat is swamps and marshes from the eastern United States to north-eastern South America. They often nest in colonies, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs.

Notes:

Spotted at a wooded detention/retention pond in an office building complex in Kennesaw, GA
