The insect is a brown moth about 3 to 4 cm long.
The moth was trying to look like a dead leaf when I spotted it. I looked closely and verified that it was indeed an insect. I had two of my students look at it closely and they thought it was a leaf so I disturbed the insect (sorry, about that) and it flew on to a nearby piece of wood. And even there it was difficult to notice.
