European Red Fox

Vulpes vulpes crucigera

Description:

Invasive species to Australia the European Red Fox, presumed female, with a kink in the tail as though she has broken it.

Habitat:

Suburban fringe, have seen this particular fox in both backyards and paddocks.

Notes:

This fox is one of a family of at least 5 individuals who I have seen together on several occasions, assuming this fox is the vixen, there is a much larger fox who I've seen with the youngsters who I assume is her mate. In this exact spot she would run out in front of me frequently on my way back from walking my dogs and provided I don't walk towards her is quite bold (even walking towards me and the dogs!) allowing me to get within just a few meters of her sometimes. Encounter lasted a couple of minuets this time before she trotted out of sight. Started to run across the track, stopped when I stopped, sniffed around (as shown) walking back and fourth as though following a scent as she did so before pausing to look at me again and padding off into the paddock.
