A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Charadrius vociferus
These Killdeer chicks are less than twenty-four hours old. There are four chicks total, hatched in a nest in the butterfly garden of the school where I work. The little guys are ready to run after their mom within minutes of hatching. Killdeer are a species of plover but are less dependent on shoreline habitats than many of their relatives.
As mentioned, this particular family was nesting in a flower bed. They like almost any open habitat.
