killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

This plover has two black bands across the chest.

Habitat:

Many open habitats, but all provide low, sparse, to non-existent vegetation. They tend to nest on gravels and other barren areas where their eggs are perfectly camouflaged.

Notes:

This one was performing its famous distraction display. It fakes an injury and flutters on the ground while leading the intruder/predator away from eggs and young.
