Sunbird's Nest

Cinnyris asiaticus

Description:

This elegant nest is a work of art. The top is roofed with a leaf and the body of the nest expertly spun with dried grass, straw, odd bits of cloth and silk cotton from exploded pods.

Habitat:

What is surprising is that this nest was totally exposed. It is in front of a door which can be seen in the photo. The apartment was inhabited and the bit of garden in front of the door was frequented not only by humans but also dogs and cats, not to mention birds like Crow and Pariah kite.

Notes:

Unfortunately the birds never did nest in this nest. Perhaps because the area was not well chosen to raise chicks in peace. When the nest began to fall to pieces it was thrown away.

Birds can choose really puzzling locations. Then it becomes our responsibility.Recently a Mallard is nesting in my neighbors front yard! There is no pond in site! The neighbor put up a small portable pool for the duck.IT is worrisome though.Sometimes you have to let them make their decision. They figure out a nesting place by trial and error.Praying that it works out for her!
