Calliope Hummingbird

Selasphorus calliope

Description:

Very small hummingbird. Male with emerald green back and head. LIght buff flanks and grey white belly. Gorget is white with rays of long curved purple feathers. These birds don't sing like Anna's. Most of the sounds are like mechanical of twits and buzzes. They can also sound like a wasp and when they take off suddenly they sound like small bottle rockets. You can see them fly really high and swooping down in J or U shape when courting a female or defending their territory. For this area they are only migrating through, so they have a small window to lay over to refresh and fuel to continue it's journey.

Habitat:

These were spotted on a trail with their favorite flowers
