Killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

Balancing act: two adult Killdeer mating on a windy day

Habitat:

Next to a small slough located next to a dirt road that separates two sloughs and is surrounded by woods and farm fields

Notes:

I watched these two sloughs acting funny when suddenly the male jumped on to the back of the female and proceeded to mate. I had to chuckle but also felt a bit sorry for the two as it was a very windy day and he seemed to have trouble staying on her back to finish what he'd started.
