Red-winged Blackbird

Agelaius phoeniceus

Description:

The red-winged blackbird is a common bird over much of North America. The male (shown) is a small black bird with red and yellow epaulets on the shoulders. The female is a dark brown with patterning on the breast, buff around the face, and a darker cap and line through the eye.

Habitat:

These are very adaptable birds and are found across a wide variety of grasslands and wetlands. Some argue that because of their habits, productivity, wide range, and indiscriminating taste in habitat that they are the most common bird in North America.

Notes:

Perched slighting behind the bird is a Halloween Pennant dragonfly.
