Bufflehead

Bucephala albeola

Description:

Petite duck. Male is bright white with a black back. Head is dark with a large white patch. Some iridescent reds and greens can be seen when closer. The female is a grayish brown with a white cheek patch (pardon my poor picture but she can be seen in image #4).

Habitat:

Brightwaters Canal, NY

Notes:

Regular winter visitors but I mistook them for hooded mergansers at first. It was a very windy day and the water was super choppy.
