Found on a boulder by the San Lorenzo River inside Henry Cowell State Park. The surrounding forest is a Redwood/Coniferous/Deciduous mix.
So not only is the Gilbert's Skink not in range, but this lizard does not have scales that are remotely similar to what a skink would have. Like I mentioned in my previous comment, this is one of the alligator lizards.
Either a California Alligator Lizard - Elgaria multicarinata multicarinata or San Francisco Alligator Lizard - Elgaria coerulea coerulea.
You tell them apart by iris color, but I can't see it well enough to call it one way or the other, and you're in range for both. Alligator lizards are super cool though!
