Pink Lady's Slipper

Description:

Large basal leaves with veins running the length of the leaf, usually two or three leaves per individual, though sometimes four. Long flower stalk with a single, bulbous pouch and three petals forming the flower. Usually pink to magenta, though it rarely can be white, the pouch opens on the front face rather than at the top. The petals are brown to maroon with a single green or yellowish green sepal at top.

Habitat:

Shaded, well-drained slopes with acidic soil. Usually growing better under pines, though occasionally in deciduous woods.

Notes:

An orchid, the lady's slipper is a delightful sight in the forest. Its growth is typically restricted to undisturbed forest.
