Black-blotched schizura (larva)

Description:

This marks the first time I've observed this species.

Habitat:

Found on a black walnut tree in a local park

Notes:

"This larva chews out a notch along a leaf edge and positions its body within. Frequently, the notch is initiated at the base of the leaf, near where the petiole attaches to the blade. Appressed to an edge, the larva blends into the leaf, with its humps and warts along the dorsum, appearing as jagged, damaged sections of the blade. It's not uncommon to find caterpillars with one to several oval, white tachinid fly eggs laid along the top and sides of the body." (information from "Caterpillars of Eastern North America")
