Nasturtium or Indian Cress

Tropaeolum majus

Description:

Tropaeolum majus 'Whirlybird Mix' or Indian cress forms a low bush or a trailing plant. It is perennial in frost free areas. The Indian cress has almost round leaves and typical trumpet shaped bright colored flowers. The seeds are large and round. Often planted in gardens, its leaves and flowers are used to decorate dishes or eaten with salad. Indian cress is rich in vitamin C.

Notes:

The whole plant of Indian cress is used, but mainly the leaves and flowers are harvested to be eaten raw or be dried and used for making tea. The flowers are showy and add lovely color to salads when used fresh.

The nasturtium is an annual flowering plant whose edible leaves and orange, red and yellow petals have a flavor that is similar to watercress. The flower buds and seeds, picked when soft and pickled in vinegar, can be used as a substitute for capers.
