Spotting

Description:

This species of deciduous tree grows abundantly in a wooded area not far from where we live in Connecticut. The pictures are of two different specimens; both mature (in my layman's estimation) but one significantly younger than the other. Teardrop-shaped leaves, smooth bark on most of the specimens I saw. They seem to be among the most common trees that grow in these particular woods, with lots of saplings sprouting up throughout the understory. I'm especially interested in identifying it because we have two saplings growing in a wildish area on our own property that strongly resemble what we saw in the woods (see my other postings to compare).
