Ichneumon Wasp

Megarhyssa macrurus

Description:

I found this Ichneumon wasp (Megarhyssa macrurus) in the process of laying her eggs deep in the wood of a fallen tree. I watched for about 30 minutes as she bored a hole with her ovipositor using chemicals to break down the wood. Then she located the larvae of the pigeon tremex somewhere deep inside the wood and laid her eggs on the larvae that will serve as food for her growing progeny.
