Red-naped Ibis

Pseudibis papillosa

Description:

Large bird with a red "skull-cap"and long, slender bill. The glossy greeny-black wings haven irregular white splotchy mark.

Habitat:

Campus of the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi where they forage and were photographed; Library Avenue just alongside where they roost on the trees.

Notes:

Loud racous sounds. Quite social. There is loud honking noise whenever a bird returns to the nest. Many nests side by side on certain chosen trees, which can be identified by the amount of bird droppings on the stretch of footpath right underneath. Juveniles do not have the red cap.Reportedly, the iris, legs and feet turn bright red at the commencement of breeding. The male is slightly larger than the female.
