Selasphorus platycercus
Medium sized hummingbirds that can reach about 4 " in length. Green upper parts and pinkish red throat. The flanks are green and the shoulders and chest to belly is white. Their song is unique that once you heard the little chips and trills you will not forget. I kept hearing them all day and all over. They are very territorial, and the males will breed with more then one female. The males will also not participate in the nest building or rearing the young. These Hummingbirds have the ability to adapt to colder weather by slowing down their metabolic state to regulate their body temperture.
Can be found in open fields to forests. In many areas they have been spoiled with feeders.
