Lark Bunting

Calamospiza melanocorys

Description:

Breeding season in the mowed cornfields. I could hear the males singing before I could see the black birds with large white wing patches. I observed the male sing while it flew up high and then drifted down to impress a female. He would do this over and over. The male's bill is short thick and a bluish grey. The female looks similar to a large sparrow with a streaky chest and white belly. White eyebrow and mustache. Faint white wing bar. A little larger then a sparrow.

Habitat:

Spotted these mostly in old cornfields on flat land.
