Arboreal Bicolour Ant

Tetraponera rufonigra

Description:

Black head, red body, black abdomen. FIERCE bite. This is called Kath pipray in Bengali. Kath means wood as in timber. Pipray is generic for ants.

Habitat:

On Passionflower vine and other plants in the garden. All over the clothes line too and inside the bamboo poleto which the clothesline is attached.

Notes:

One bite on my wrist was enough to make my arm swell up to my elbows. The area remained "hot"to touch for at least two days. The actual bite area was inflamed with a dot of pus and it itched like crazy and hurt a lot. Even looking at this ant is freaking me out.
